Council staff step up to take 9 million steps for better health

Staff from councils across the UK have been busy taking to the stairs as part of a bold new stair climbing initiative, encouraging staff to get active in 2016.

StepJockey’s unique ‘Stairway to Health’ Local Authority initiative launched in February this year and has seen nearly 600 teams take on three unique stair climbing challenges. Over 20 councils competed against each other throughout the year, incentivising staff to ditch the lift and take the stairs instead.

The challenges saw staff take more than 9 million steps on their office stairs and burn more than 700,000 calories in the process. Challenges have included Mount Everest, World Towers and a unique Around the World stair climbing journey.

Forming healthy habits

The most recent challenge, Around the World, finished in October 2016 and saw a record 600 staff follow the route of the epic adventure from Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days. The results were remarkable, in total 219,000 calories were burned in just 4 weeks to circumnavigate the globe while on their office stairs - see the full challenge results.

Competition between the councils was fierce, with employees from across the country all vying to reach the top of the leaderboards. As the challenge reached its close, Lewisham Council pulled ahead and grabbed first place, with over 65,000 calories burned by Lewisham staff alone.

Reaching for the stairs

The success of this pioneering national initiative has been twofold. As well as providing gentle competition and engagement, those who took part reported real health benefits.

We asked all players who took part in the challenges to tell us what they thought StepJockey and here is what they said:

I have gone from someone who didn’t use the stairs, as I have some mobility issues, to being able to climb bottom to top. All as a result of the challenge! Harrow Council player
