Standing is the new sitting: 5 great reasons to use a standing desk

Here at StepJockey, we know that creating sustainable healthy habits is the way forward to revolutionising workplace wellness.

Simple changes, such as taking the stairs instead of the lift or swapping sitting at your desk all day for some time spent standing instead, can all have a huge positive impact on your health.

As well as labelling stairways for calorie burn, StepJockey has launched a beautiful new range of standing desk calorie burn smart-signs. The signs are seamlessly integrated into standing desks, providing inspirational health messages that nudge you to stand throughout the working day.

And used alongside our free smartphone app, anyone can track how many calories they burn simply by standing. You can also set goals, track your progress toward calorie burn goals and participate in our exciting challenges.

Why do you need a standing desk?

Here are our top five great reasons for taking a stand against desk-bound workplace inactivity:

  1. Sitting too much is very bad for your health. Men who sit more than 6 hours a day have a higher mortality rate and women doing the same have a 37% higher mortality rate. If you sit for more than 23 hours a week you are 64% more likely to die from heart disease.

  1. Thirty minutes to an hour of daily exercise is not enough to counteract the negative effects of prolonged sitting. However, a study published by the US Centers for Disease Control found that sit to stand devices are an effective method to generate health benefits and combat the negative effects of sitting all day.

  1. The good news is - you can do something about it! Including between two and four hours of standing rather than sitting each working day can have major health benefits which do combat the effects of a sedentary lifestyle, according to research funded by Public Health England.

  1. A study from the University of Chester found that standing during the week can be the equivalent to running 10 marathons a year. That’s a serious achievement.

  1. A standing desk can increase your focus, alertness and activity levels. When standing it is easier to release restless energy. Combine that with the good effects on circulation, blood sugar and metabolism and standing really does make it easier to focus on the task at hand.

Major employers such as Microsoft and Virgin Media have already provided standing desks to boost their employees’ health and productivity. Organisations around the world are following suit in the bid to get desk-based staff more active and engaged, and we’re proud to be helping these companies get the most value out of their investment.

Simple things like spending part of your working day standing instead of sitting, or taking the stairs instead of the lift, can make a really big difference to your health. Our standing desk signs provide the right nudge at the right time to remind you it's time to stand up.

Build up and feel the benefits

As with any new health programme, it’s important to start with short sessions and build up to standing for around an hour at a time, up to four times a day. It’s also worth investing in an anti-fatigue mat to  make standing for long periods more comfortable, and help protect the muscles in your legs, back and shoulders.

“Moving more makes so much sense when you think about it. We’re all so used to sitting all day - at work, commuting and relaxing at home - that many of us don’t notice how much time is actually spent sat down. But building movement into your day shouldn’t be daunting.” says Paul Nuki, co-founder and CEO of StepJockey.
