This Wednesday the 25th of April an event that is very close to StepJockey’s heart is taking place. No Elevators Day is a global event where organisations and individuals all around the world are committing to ditching elevators and escalators and taking the stairs.
Technological advances over the past 50 years have made it easier for us all to stand still as much as possible and the majority of us spend eight plus hours a day sitting at a desk. Physical activity levels have dropped by 30% over the past two generations and the main driving factor behind this is our sedentary office habits.
There is a growing realisation about the health risks associated with sedentary behaviour which has been compared to the last generation’s smoking habit. That is why the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA) launched their Now We Move campaign in 2012 in an effort to help people build more movement into their daily routine.
No Elevators Day became a part of the Now We Move campaign in 2015 and by 2017 it had gained such support that it had become a global event. This year buildings in Bulgaria, Mexico, Lithuania, Turkey, Poland and many more countries will be sealing off elevators in busy areas and encouraging stair use.
The benefits of getting people out of the elevators and on to the stairs are not just limited to improving workplace health. Reducing elevator use can save employees a significant amount of time by cutting lift waiting times, resulting in increased productivity.
StepJockey is delighted to be teaming up with the ISCA to help promote No Elevators Day, an initiative that is so aligned with our own message of transforming workplace health. StepJockey will be reaching out to our partners around the world to encourage participation in this fantastic event. No Elevators day has grown hugely over the last three years and StepJockey is looking forward to collaborating further with the ISCA on this fantastic project.
With 79 events already planned for the 25th of April let’s see just how many people we can get ditching the elevator!
